Lea Wharf
About this project
Lea Wharf, located in the heart of Hertford on the River Lea, is a development of 98 apartments that incorporates new retail, leisure, and medical facilities on the site of the former Bircherley Green Shopping Centre, which has received a Quality Recognition Award.
BDC was appointed as structural engineering consultants for the partial demolition of the existing shopping centre, the refurbishment of the car park, and the detailed design of the new buildings.
BDC conducted surveys of the existing structures, prepared demolition drawings, and provided a specification for the partial demolition of the car park and shopping parade. We also provided the necessary documentation for the Party Wall Award to ensure the safe execution of the demolition works.
The car park structure was modified to upgrade the existing cladding and lift shafts, seamlessly tying it into the new development. BDC collaborated closely with the client and architect to develop a structural solution that integrated industrial-style wharf features into the design, ensuring it was buildable, cost-effective, durable, and low-maintenance.
Additionally, BDC designed the reinforced concrete structure for the public facilities at the ground floor as a “strong floor,” allowing the four stories of apartments above to be constructed with masonry and precast floor slabs. This approach helped minimise construction costs while maintaining the structural integrity of the building.
